Today was our last general meeting of the school year. Not many of you were able to make it, but we did discuss a few important matters. We spent a little bit of time talking about the benefits of investing in clean and renewable energy. We took a look at Obama's plan and it seems like now would be a good time to buy. We will ask more about it during the end of the year party. Next on our agenda was to look at some possible sells. The consensus was that we get rid of Exxon, Lockheed martin and Gold, but, again, we will discuss this a little more at the party.

Also, please be on the lookout for an email from Natalie asking for your opinion on these stocks! Please don't hold back and be sure to say something if you feel strongly one way or the other! As we prepare for summer and move into next year, we are really looking to restructure our portfolio by making it more diversified. You can help us! (Note: The most recently purchased stocks (McDonald's, Altria and Walmart) are performing well! This is great news!

First, we helped Akua with her research on the company, Aqua America. We took a look at some annual reports and figures...I hope we were useful!

Second on the agenda was looking at our portfolio and discussing some more stock options. We took a look at Exelon Corporation and decided to look at some other possibilities in construction (since the Obama stimulus package focuses some of its attention to infrastructure). The companies that we looked at in the construction sector are Jacob's Engineering Group (JEC) and Fluor Corporation (FLR). Both look like relatively strong buys, however, we will be waiting until next week to make a final decision. Please come by with suggestions for or against these possible purchases!

Join us next week as we continue the discussion of our portfolio and take a closer look at construction and what it could mean for our returns. We will also be looking McKesson and Cardinal Health as the last two stock options that were presented earlier in the semester.

Also, mark your calendars for MONDAY. APRIL 20TH @ 9PM because we will be holding our annual Senior Panel. This is a great opportunity to hear about how seniors have managed to get a job in this economic climate! Bring questions!

Alyssa Martin presented on careers in commercial banking and corporate finance. Rochi went over our portfolio and we discussed a few possible stock options such as McDonalds, gold, Birtish American Tobacco and Altria. We ended up bringing it to a vote and decided to buy 60 shares of McDonalds' stock. Lastly, Anna mentioned to the group that she has entered us into an Investopedia challenge. See her for more information. She also voiced her concern about how technology-oriented our portfolio is. Questions? Comments? Concerns? Bring them next week!

In our last meeting before spring break, we decided to keep it casual. The first topic under discussion was changing our meeting day (same time, same place, different day of the week; which one works best for you?). Next, we talked about renting vs purchasing homes in the US and how that has played into the current economic crisis. We also discussed our website and the possibility of listing our members on the website or consolidating the blog with the website. Lastly, we talked about and read a recently published article in the Bi-Co News that talked about our club and how we are managing under the current conditions.

We will hold a meeting the Tuesday directly following break. At that time we will decide on another day to hold our weekly meetings.

To start out we watched a video on MorningStar.com which discussed the possible benefits and repercussions of nationalizing banks in America.

We then continued to decide on stocks for our portfolio. After taking a vote, the group decided to buy Walmart and sell Target. Other stocks that were discussed include: Apollo, Netflix, Aastrom, Wyeth, Genetech and Coca-Cola.

Welcome back! Tonight we held a general meeting. We informed some of the new faces about what our club does. Please see handouts on our portfolio and charter proposal. What would you like to see more or less of this semester? This is your opportunity to let us know!
We also took a vote on what to do with our account. Should we put it in Bryn Mawr's name and have them regulate it or continue to run the account on our own? The outcome was unanimous: we will be managing our account on our own.

Kirsten Kemp came to talk to us about her job at Chatham Financial Group.

She graduated in '06 with a B.A./M.A. in Math and has been working for Chatham ever since. She described her work environment very similar to Bryn Mawr...full of intelligent people with a warm, family-like atmosphere. Chatham focuses a lot on hedging. She helps clients move away from rising interest rates.

She is on the advisory team, so she helps people (usually businesses) find lenders. Her main role is comparing all the term sheets; some being more quantitative versus qualitative. She comes up with a lot of the models which requires a lot of math, she said. The other parts of the company work with getting out of loans; some people want to get out of them so they help to figure out what you could do in that situation. She then spoke about the economy's current state and its influence on Chatham and her job specifically.

She was very happy to be here and we thank her for her time!

UBS Presentation by BMC Alum, Diane Scarpa 11/18/08

Diane Scarpa comes back to her alma mater to discuss the logistics behind her current job as a Financial Advisor at UBS. She was an Art History major while at Bryn Mawr, but always had an interest in investment banking throughout her childhood. After graduation, she partnered with her father's business. Her clients are mostly women in their 30s and 40s.

Her powerpoint and handouts, entitled "Cornerstones of Investing," presented many useful tips for our group. She urged us to diversify, if possible, and explained various other ways in which we can invest our money.

We thank her for joining us.

Next week: Come watch a movie (we don't know which one yet) before we head off for Thanksgiving!!!

In general, hedge funds require you to lock up your money for long periods of time. It’s private, it’s risky and you generally have to have a lot of money in order to open one up. They do lots of rich, heavy research, which is nice, especially when you are investing such a large amount of money!

Investment group's experiments in finance contribute valuable experience, funds for campus improvements

In many ways, the Owl Investment Group resembles any other student organization. Although there are 60 official members, the number of students that shows up on any given Wednesday night to learn about finance and business while enjoying a little socializing is usually closer to 25, and there's a smaller core group that's most involved.

However, there is one thing—well, actually about 100,000 things—that make the group unique.

In the 1970s an anonymous alumna donated $100,000 to Bryn Mawr with the express purpose of creating a student group that would introduce its members to the world of high finance by allowing them to invest the money in the stock market.

In the years since, the group, which was originally known as the Student Investment Committee, has funded everything from concerts to treadmills for the gym with the returns on its investments.

OIG's investments have seen annual returns of around 11 percent for the last several years. However, the group hasn't been immune to the recent economic downturn and has seen the value of its portfolio drop from around $130,000 to closer to $120,000 since the summer.

Executive Director June Lee is typical of many students involved with the group. She came to Bryn Mawr with no plans of a career in finance. But after a few economics courses and her experience with the group, she's now on her way to a job with Morgan Stanley.

Other recent graduates from the group have gone on to be associates and analysts at a number of finance powerhouses, including Moody's, Janney Montgomery Scott, and Citigroup.

OIG Executive board member Jill Settlemyer '10 is a political science major but is considering going on to get her MBA, something she said probably wouldn't have happened had she not gone to a place like Bryn Mawr.

"A liberal-arts college gives you the flexibility to explore all sorts of academic interests and Bryn Mawr's so small that I could join a group like this and not feel intimidated," she said.

Settlemyer also pointed to Bryn Mawr's all-women environment as a huge plus for a group dedicated to finance, a predominantly male field.

Last year's OIG president Danny Tang '07, who now works as an analyst at KKR Financial, and Alyssa Martin '10, current co-chair along with Anna Mathew '10 of the Personal Finance Planning Committee, saw the work they were doing with the group's personal finance committee as so important that they've managed to get the College to offer a pilot personal-finance course that will debut in fall 2008.

In 2007 Tang and Lee also approached Bryn Mawr CFO John Griffith to see if he'd be interested in advising the group and helping with outreach to alumnae and business professionals.

"I think just about everyone who works at a place like Bryn Mawr does it in part because they value education, so it's always great when you can work with students," said Griffith.

Among the alumnae Griffith has arranged for the group to meet is Alexandra Kaufmann of Pershing Square Capital Management.

Kaufmann and Griffith planned a meeting for Feb. 15 and invited OIG students to come meet with her on what turned out to be the year's only snow day.

"She was stunned that 20 students made their way out in the middle of a snowstorm to talk to her. In fact, I think they'd still be in the conference room if we didn't put an end to it," said Griffith.

"I was extremely impressed with the caliber of the students and their knowledge of finance," said Kaufmann. "They were very engaging and certainly not shy about asking questions. It ended up being more of a two-hour Q-and-A session and less of a lecture, which was great."

As the economy tightens, Griffith says, groups like OIG will be invaluable to liberal-arts students interested in business and finance careers.

"When the economy tightens up, recruiters tend to stick with the business schools so it becomes harder to get your foot in the door. So if a student is lucky enough to get an interview, she's going to be expected to have a certain level of financial literacy. And while our students have the problem solving and communications skills these firms are looking for, it's very hard to do well in an interview if you don't know what the people are talking about," said Griffith.

OIG will be holding its annual Senior Career Panel from 9-10 p.m. on Wednesday, April 23, in Carpenter B21. The event features graduating seniors talking about the ups and downs of their job searches, and all Bryn Mawr and Haverford students are welcome to attend.

Private equity: Equity capital that is made available to companies or investors, but not quoted on a stock market. The funds raised through private equity can be used to develop new products and technologies, to expand working capital, to make acquisitions, or to strengthen a company's balance sheet.

Leveraged buyouts (LBOs): the acquisition of another company using a significant amount of borrowed money (bonds or loans) to meet the cost of acquisition. Often, the assets of the company being acquired are used as collateral for the loans in addition to the assets of the acquiring company. The purpose of leveraged buyouts is to allow companies to make large acquisitions without having to commit a lot of capital.

Write-down: Reducing the book value of an asset because it is overvalued compared to the market value.

Credit crunch: An economic condition where investment capital is difficult to obtain. Banks and investors become wary of lending funds to corporations, thereby driving up the price of debt products for borrowers.

Fannie Mae (Federal National Mortgage Association [FNMA]): A government-sponsored enterprise (GSE) that was created in 1938 to expand the flow of mortgage money by creating a secondary mortgage market. Fannie Mae is a publicly traded company which operates under a congressional charter that directs Fannie Mae to channel its efforts into increasing the availability and affordability of homeownership for low-, moderate-, and middle-income Americans.

Freddie Mac (Federal Home Loan Mortgage Corp) (FHLMC) : A stockholder-owned, government-sponsored enterprise (GSE) chartered by Congress in 1970 to keep money flowing to mortgage lenders in support of homeownership and rental housing for middle income Americans. The FHLMC purchases, guarantees and securitizes mortgages to form mortgage-backed securities. The mortgage-backed securities that it issues tend to be very liquid and carry a credit rating close to that of U.S. Treasuries.

Bubble: 1. An economic cycle characterized by rapid expansion followed by a contraction.2. A surge in equity prices, often more than warranted by the fundamentals and usually in a particular sector, followed by a drastic drop in prices as a massive selloff occurs.3. A theory that security prices rise above their true value and will continue to do so until prices go into freefall and the bubble bursts.

Dutch Tulip Bulb Market Bubble: One of the most famous market bubbles of all time, which occurred in Holland during the early 1600s when speculation drove the value of tulip bulbs to extremes. At the height of the market, the rarest tulip bulbs traded for as much as six times the average person's annual salary.

Municipal Bond: A debt security issued by a state, municipality or county to finance its capital expenditures. Municipal bonds are exempt from federal taxes and from most state and local taxes, especially if you live in the state in which the bond is issued. Also known as a "muni".

Eat well, sleep well: An adage that, referring to the risk/return trade-off, says that the type of security an investor chooses depends on whether he or she wants to eat well or sleep well.

Stock Terms, Charts, and General Information

Terms Listed in the Stock Quotes

P/E Ratio: company’s current share price compared to a per share earning

EPS is usually from the last 4 quarters, but sometimes it can be estimates for the next 4 quarters.
High P/E means that investors are expecting higher earnings growth in the future, so
high = good!
However, decisions should not solely based on P/E.
More useful to compare companies of the same industry. Growth will be similar.

EPS: earnings per share; the company’s net profit divided by the number of common shares outstanding

Volume: how many shares sold that day

Avg. Volume: how many shares are usually sold per day

Dividend: portion of the company’s earnings paid to its shareholders in the form of money

Yield: portion of the company’s earnings paid to its shareholders in the form of shares

Ask Price (Offer Price): the lowest price that a seller is willing to accept for a security

Bid Price: the highest price that the buyer is willing to pay

After Hours: means that activity is going on after the market closes at 4:00 EST

Other Important Stock Terms

Common Stock: majority of stock held by the public. It has voting rights and the right to a share in the dividend.

Preferred Stock: fewer rights than the common stock, companies that issue preferred stock usually pay consistent dividends, and they get first call on dividends over common stock.

Beta: A measure of the expected change of a stock’s or portfolio’s return relative to that of the market. The beta of a benchmark index is 1.00.

Exchange-Traded Fund (ETF): An instrument that provides exposure to an index and is traded on a stock exchange; offer investors a low-cost, liquid means to invest in indices.

Growth Stock: A company that is expected to generate above-average revenue and earnings growth relative to its industry or the overall market.

Value Stock: A stock that is underpriced by the market relative to its long-term fundamentals, such as dividends, earnings, and sales.

The drama that has gripped financial markets the past few days wouldn't be complete without a cliffhanger. The one consuming Wall Street these days is this: What killed Bear Stearns?

The investment bank's collapse might look easily explained: Its lenders fled as rumors swirled that Bear was running short on cash, an old-fashioned bank run.

But the rumors and the cash crunch lead to a chicken-and-egg conundrum: Which came first, the cash crunch, or rumors of the cash crunch? Were the rumors the result of the normal sort of panic that plagues Wall Street, or something more malicious?

Wall Street analysts, as usual, were caught off guard. Buckingham Research analysts argued in a March 11 report that concerns about Bear's access to cash were "overdone." Lehman Brothers reiterated its $110 price target for Bear on March 13, three days before Bear got sold for $2 a share to J.P. Morgan Chase.

Analysts aside, there were plenty of people in the market who saw something very bad coming. Securities regulators are looking at suspicious trades in stock-options contracts.

On March 10, traders purchased roughly 30,000 "put" options that would pay off if Bear's stock, then trading in the mid-$60s, fell to $35 by March 20, according to Universa Investments, a Santa Monica, Calif., hedge fund that specializes in exotic options-trading strategies. Another 20,000 or so put options that would pay off if Bear's stock fell to $25 by March 20 were purchased on March 13.

In effect, the contracts only hit the jackpot if Bear suffered an extreme event, quickly. "These were incredibly unusual orders," says Mark Spitznagel, Universa's manager.

Of course, there's another explanation in this mystery: Bear dug its own hole. Like all of the investment banks, Bear was heavily leveraged. Its assets were 33 times greater than its equity capital, meaning it depended heavily on borrowed money to invest.

It was about as leveraged as Carlyle Capital, the mortgage fund that was pushed to the brink last week. When you depend that heavily on debt, there's very little margin for error.

Reality Check: Profit Expectations Too High

Even if you think the credit market's and economy's problems have been totally solved, you might find the following predictions tough to swallow:

Financial-sector earnings will be up 315% in the fourth quarter of this year from last year and 27% for all of 2008.

Overall, companies in the Standard & Poor's 500-stock index will enjoy earnings growth of 74% year over year in the fourth quarter and 17% for 2008, the biggest gain since 2004.

Anyone with a toe in reality should be skeptical of such numbers, which are the forecasts among Wall Street analysts, according to data compiled by S&P.

Analysts have been downgrading their earnings expectations. But they're not done, especially if the economy is in recession. Earnings fell 31% in 2001, the year of the most recent recession, according to S&P. They fell 7% and 15%, respectively, in 1990 and 1991, the prior recession. They fell an estimated 6% in 2007, when the economy was apparently not in recession. It's hard to see how they'll rebound dramatically in a year that could include a recession.

Thousands of girls on college campuses around the nation go through sorority rush each year. It goes likes this: you meet numerous sorority girls whom you try to impress with your appearance, communication skills, and personality; if they like you, you get invited back for a second round of interviews. Throughout the process, the girls keep you on your toes. But once they bid on you, the attempts to impress become mutual. For Kristen Stortz, a junior at Duke University, rushing a sorority didn't just help her meet new friends--it prepared her for the interview process for her finance internship with JP Morgan Chase.

Stortz joked that the best analogy for her interview experience was the rush process, saying, "If they like you, and want you back, it becomes your turn to decide if you like them, and they basically 'rush' you and try and make you stay with the firm and sign the offer." Dinners, free trips, and constant streams of hand-written notes are not uncommon gifts received by those who've been offered summer internships. Sure, rushing a sorority involves a bit more pointless small talk and attention to fashion, but in the end it may just help you land your dream job.

Stortz spent the summer working in the Sales and Trades department for JP Morgan Chase in Midtown Manhattan. Her particular assignment was the emerging market equities sector. While many summer internships look a bit more like volunteer work than a real job--with their 20-hour time commitments and lack of a salary--Stortz's experience with JP Morgan Chase more closely resembled the real world of finance.

"Since I worked in emerging market equities, I had to be at my desk at 6:00am in order to catch up on all the pertinent economic reports that came out worldwide overnight. So, my hours were about 6:00 am to 5:00 or 6:00 pm."

Delivering the news was so important for Stortz because of the nature of the Sales and Trading industry. "Basically, the sales team has to try and sell bonds and stocks in companies endorsed by JP Morgan. The best way to predict what would be selling well was to read as much financial news as possible before the trading floor opened." Basically, she was in charge of making sure that the traders knew enough to make competent decisions when doing trades worth millions of dollars.

For her hard work, Stortz earned an $11,000 salary over the course of the summer, along with a $2,000 housing allowance. Interns not working in the emerging market equities sector were afforded the luxury of an extra hour of sleep, but were still expected at the office from 7:00 am until 5:00 pm each day. At times, Stortz could stay as late as 10:00pm or 11:00pm. However, the firm was accommodating in these circumstances. "After 6:30pm, the firm provided us with $25 for dinner, and if we were there really late, they would pay to have a car take us home."

Stortz first learned about the internship through the career center at Duke University. The application process involved an initial resume and cover letter screening, an on-campus interview, and a final round of interviews in New York City. Though Stortz was successful in her application, she described the process as "long and definitely exhausting." But, she says, "The process is very necessary--the number of applicants is tremendous. There has to be some way to filter out those who threw in an application last-minute and those who really want the position. If you're willing to deal with the whole process, you better want the job."

In spite of the difficult application process and long hours, Stortz enjoyed her experience and plans to return for another internship this summer. When asked about the highlights of the internship, Stortz replied, "My favorite part of the experience was gaining exposure to the financial world on Wall Street. I learned an incredible amount, and it was awesome to learn from such smart people." Her least favorite part? The 5:00 am wake-up, "for obvious reasons."

While many college students contemplate careers on Wall Street with an eye on a lucrative salary, Stortz warns that this isn't reason enough to enter the world of finance. "If you want to do well at a job in finance, you need to like it. Some people do it because it pays well, but the job requires a lot of time and can be stressful and tiring. In my opinion, this is only worth it if it is something in which you are genuinely interested."

The Fed cut its short-term interest-rate target 0.75 percentage point to 2.25%, not the full point that markets had been expecting. It was the largest disappointment the Fed has delivered to markets since the central bank began cutting rates in September. the move was also a signal that because of the Fed's concerns about inflation, it expects its other initiatives to bear more of the burden of stimulating growth.

The past six days have shaken American capitalism.

Between Tuesday, when financial markets began turning against Bear Stearns Cos., and Sunday night, when the bank disappeared into the arms of J.P. Morgan Chase & Co., Washington policy makers, federal regulators and Wall Street bankers struggled to keep the trouble from tanking financial markets and exacerbating the country's deep economic uncertainty.

The mood changed daily, as did the apparent scope of the problem. On Friday, Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson thought markets would be calmed by the announcement that the Federal Reserve had agreed to help bail out Bear Stearns. President Bush gave a reassuring speech that day about the fundamental soundness of the U.S. economy. By Saturday, however, Mr. Paulson had become convinced that a definitive agreement to sell Bear Stearns had to be inked before markets opened yesterday.

Bear Stearns's board of directors was whipsawed by the rapidly unfolding events, in particular by the pressure from Washington to clinch a deal, says one person familiar with their deliberations.

"We thought they gave us 28 days," this person says, in reference to the terms of the Fed's bailout financing. "Then they gave us 24 hours."

In the end, Washington more or less threw its rule book out the window. The Fed, which has been at the forefront of the government response, made a number of unprecedented moves. Among other things, it agreed to temporarily remove from circulation a big chunk of difficult-to-trade securities and to offer direct loans to Wall Street investment banks for the first time.

The terms of the Bear Stearns sale contained some highly unusual features. For one, J.P. Morgan retains the option to purchase Bear's valuable headquarters building in midtown Manhattan, even if Bear's board recommends a rival offer. Also, the Fed has taken responsibility for $30 billion in hard-to-trade securities on Bear Stearns's books, with potential for both profit and loss.
The question now looming over the transaction: Has the government set a precedent for propping up failing financial institutions at a time when its more traditional tools don't appear to be working? Cutting interest rates -- which the Fed is expected to do again today, by between a half percentage point and a full point -- hasn't yet done much to loosen capital markets gummed up by piles of bad debt.
Even though the transaction ultimately could leave taxpayers on the hook for losses, the political response so far has been fairly positive. "When you're looking into the abyss, you don't quibble over details," said New York Democratic Senator Charles Schumer.

Tuesday, March 11

From the earliest days of the financial crisis that began last year, the Federal Reserve had been working on contingency plans to lend to investment banks. Such firms regularly asked for government help to finance their large inventories of securities such as mortgage-backed bonds. They hoped to get the same favorable terms the Fed also gave to banks that borrow from its "discount window." But the Fed is barred from making such loans to firms that aren't banks, except by invoking a special clause which it hadn't used to lend money since the Great Depression. Officials worried that the drama surrounding a decision to do something for the first time since the 1930s could be damaging to confidence.

On Tuesday, officials unveiled what they thought came close: a promise to lend up to $200 billion in Treasury bonds to investment banks for 28 days. In return, the Treasury would get securities backed by home mortgages, whose uncertain values helped spark the current crisis, and other hard-to-trade collateral. The first swap was scheduled for March 27. At first, the firms were elated.

That same day, the market began turning on Bear Stearns. Phones were ringing off the hook at rival firms such as Goldman Sachs Group Inc., Morgan Stanley and Credit Suisse Group. Clients of those firms were growing worried about trades they had entered into with Bear Stearns -- about whether Bear Stearns would be able to make good on its obligations. The clients asked the other investment banks whether they would be willing to take the clients' places in the trades. But credit officers at Goldman, Morgan Stanley and others -- worried themselves about Bear Stearns's condition -- began to say no.

At Bear Stearns, Chief Financial Officer Samuel Molinaro, along with company lawyers and Treasurer Robert Upton, were trying to make sense of the situation. They felt comfortable with their capital base of roughly $17 billion and were looking forward to reporting Bear Stearns's first-quarter earnings, which had been respectable amid the market carnage.

One theory began developing internally: Hedge funds with short positions on Bear -- bets that the company's stock would fall -- were trying to speed the decline by spreading negative rumors.

For the first part of the week, Chief Executive Officer Alan Schwartz was out of pocket. Although Bear Stearns had been struggling with mortgage-related losses and problems in its wealth-management unit, Mr. Schwartz was hosting a Bear Stearns media conference in Palm Beach, Fla. On Wednesday morning, he left the conference briefly to do an interview with CNBC in an effort to deflect rumors about liquidity issues at the firm.

Thursday

On Thursday evening, after customers had continued to pull their money out of Bear Stearns, the bank reached out to J. P. Morgan, looking to discuss ways the Wall Street giant could help ease Bear's cash crunch.

By then, Bear Stearns's cash position had dwindled to just $2 billion. In a conference call at 7:30 p.m., officials at Bear Stearns and the Securities and Exchange Commission told Fed and Treasury officials that the firm saw little option other than to file for bankruptcy protection the next morning.

Bear Stearns's hope was that the Fed would make a loan from its discount window to provide several weeks of breathing room. That, the firm hoped, would perhaps halt a run on the bank by allowing it to swap bonds for the cash necessary to return to customers.

The Fed's standard preference in dealing with a troubled institution is to first seek a private-sector solution, such as a sale or financing agreement. But the possibility of a bankruptcy filing Friday morning created a hard deadline.

A trigger point was looming for Bear Stearns in the so-called repo market, where banks and securities firms extend and receive short-term loans, typically made overnight and backed by securities. At 7:30 a.m., Bear Stearns would have to begin paying back some of its billions of dollars in repo borrowings. If the firm didn't repay the money on time, its creditors could start selling the collateral Bear had pledged to them. The implications went well beyond Bear Stearns: If other investors questioned the safety of loans they made in the repo market, they could start to withhold funds from other investment banks and companies.

The $4.5 trillion repo market isn't a newfangled innovation like subprime-backed collateralized debt obligations. It is a decades-old, plain-vanilla market critical to the smooth functioning of capital markets. A default by a major counterparty would have been unprecedented, and could have had unpredictable consequences for the entire market.

Federal Reserve Bank of New York President Timothy Geithner worked into the night, grabbing just two hours of sleep near the bank's downtown Manhattan headquarters. His staff spent the night going over Bear's books and talking to potential suitors including J. P. Morgan. The hard reality was that even interested buyers said they needed more time to go over the company.

The pace and complexity of events left Bear's board of directors groping for answers. "It was a traumatic experience," says one person who participated. Sleep deprivation set in, with some of the hundreds of attorneys and bankers sleeping only a few hours during a 72-hour sprint. Dress was casual, with neckties quickly shorn.

Friday

At 5 a.m. Friday, Mr. Geithner, Mr. Paulson and Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke, calling in from home, joined a conference call to debate whether Bear should be allowed to fail or whether the Fed should lend it enough money to get through the weekend. At 7 a.m. they settled on the lifeline option. Mr. Bernanke assembled the Fed's other three available governors to vote for the loan, the first time since the Depression the Fed would use its extraordinary authority to lend to nonbanks.

The Fed announced that it would lend Bear money, through J.P. Morgan, for up to 28 days to get the venerable investment bank through its cash crunch. At 9 a.m., Mr. Geithner, Mr. Paulson and aides addressed a conference call of bond dealers and bankers. Mr. Paulson took the lead, saying the dealer community had "a stake" in the overall deal working out.

But the markets didn't take well to the news that a major investment bank was on the brink of failure. Stocks sank. Other investment banks were seeing lenders turn cautious. Fed officials led by Bill Dudley, head of open-market operations, began planning a more direct response: opening the discount window to all investment banks, a request the Fed had resisted for months.

J.P. Morgan's effort to buy Bear kicked into high gear on Friday afternoon, just hours after the big bank and the Fed had provided Bear with the 28-day lifeline. Steve Black, co-head of J.P. Morgan's investment bank, returned early from vacation in the Caribbean, spearheading the bank's efforts with his J.P. Morgan counterpart in London, Bill Winters.

Mr. Black's role was pivotal. He was a longtime associate of J.P. Morgan Chief Executive James Dimon. And Mr. Black had a long relationship with Bear's CEO, Mr. Schwartz, dating back to the 1970s, when the two were fraternity brothers at Duke University.

J.P. Morgan bankers were broken into some 16 teams -- all with specific due-diligence assignments. Some focused on Bear's prime-brokerage business, which was attractive to J.P. Morgan. Others concentrated on technical operations, commodities, and the like.

As some Fed staffers worked from a conference room on Bear's 12th floor, Federal Reserve officials insisted that the firm complete a deal that weekend. Officials made it clear the loan was only for the short term to ensure a deal got done as quickly as possible. Their priority was that Bear's counterparties -- the parties that stood on the other side of its trades -- would be able to arrive at work Monday knowing their contracts were good, minimizing the risk of a generalized flight from the markets.

Treasury Secretary Paulson knew that the day's work wouldn't be enough to keep Bear afloat over the long term. Still, Mr. Paulson, a former Goldman Sachs chief executive and the administration's point man for financial markets, thought Bear Stearns would survive through the weekend.

Saturday

That illusion was shattered Saturday morning, when Mr. Paulson was deluged by calls to his home from bank chief executives. They told him they worried the run on Bear would spread to other financial institutions. After several such calls, Mr. Paulson realized the Fed and Treasury had to get the J.P. Morgan deal done before the markets in Asia opened on late Sunday, New York time.

"It was just clear that this franchise was going to unravel if the deal wasn't done by the end of the weekend," Mr. Paulson said in an interview yesterday.

A year ago, Mr. Paulson wouldn't have considered Bear Stearns big enough that its collapse would present a threat to the U.S. financial system. But confidence in the economy and financial sector are so shaky now that he had no doubt that the Fed and government had to act to prevent its bankruptcy, according to a senior Treasury official.

At 8 a.m. Saturday, the J.P. Morgan bankers assembled to receive instructions in the bank's executive offices, located on the 8th floor of its Park Avenue headquarters. One hour later, they headed down the street to Bear Stearns's headquarters to pore over Bear's books. Due diligence had begun.

Back at J.P. Morgan's headquarters, top executives set up war rooms on the executive floor, commandeering offices of colleagues who weren't directly involved in the negotiations. Bankers darted in and out of offices searching for the top brass, who were also moving from room to room. Mr. Dimon, wearing slacks and a dark sweater, urged the bankers to stay calm and focused. "Everyone take a deep breath," he said at one point.

By 7:30 p.m., hunger pangs had taken hold. Someone ordered Chinese food. A security guard lay out a buffet spread.

That evening, Mr. Black got on the phone to Mr. Schwartz, Bear Stearns's CEO. J.P. Morgan would be willing to buy Bear Stearns, subject to the conclusion of due diligence, he told Mr. Schwartz. The J.P. Morgan executives didn't set a specific price, instead providing a dollars-per-share range, according to people familiar with the matter. At the high end was a figure in the low double digits, these people say.

By 1 a.m., the bankers headed home for a few hours of sleep.

Sunday

Early the next morning, Messrs. Dimon and Black and other top executives sat around a conference-room table to discuss the situation. One by one, they began expressing concern about the speed at which the situation was progressing. They weren't comfortable with the level of due diligence being conducted. Were there more problems hidden deep in Bear's balance sheet that they hadn't found yet? Would market turmoil result in more problems? Was J.P. Morgan really willing to take such a risk without full information?

"Things didn't firm up -- they got more shaky," according to one person familiar with the meeting.

Finally, they came to a conclusion. J.P. Morgan wouldn't buy Bear Stearns on its own. The bank needed help before it would do the deal.

Mr. Paulson was frequently on the phone with Bear and J. P. Morgan executives, negotiating the details of the deal, the senior Treasury official said. Initially, Morgan wanted to pick off select parts of Bear, but Mr. Paulson insisted that it take the entire Bear portfolio, the official said.

This was no normal negotiation, says one person involved in the matter. Instead of two parties, there were three, this person explains, the third being the government. It is unclear what explicit requests were made by the Fed or Treasury. But the deal now in place has a number of features that are highly unusual, according to people who worked on the transaction.

In addition to its option to purchase Bear's headquarters building, J.P. Morgan has the option to purchase just under 20% of Bear Stearns's shares at a price of $2 each. That feature gives J.P. Morgan an ability to largely block a rival offer, says a person with knowledge of the contract.

The deal also is highly "locked up," meaning that J.P. Morgan cannot walk, even if there is a heavy deterioration in Bear's business or future prospects. Bear Stearns holders can, of course, vote the deal down. But the effect that would have on J.P. Morgan's ongoing managerial oversight and the Fed's guarantees is largely unknown.

"We're in hyperspace," says one person who worked on the deal. All these matters are very likely to be litigated in court eventually, this person adds.

The Fed spent the weekend putting together a plan to be announced Sunday evening, regardless of the outcome of Bear's negotiations, that would enable all Wall Street banks to borrow from the central bank. Mr. Bernanke called the Fed's five governors together for a vote Sunday afternoon. All five voted in favor, using for the second time since Friday the Fed's authority to lend to nonbanks.

The steps were announced at the same time the Fed agreed to lend $30 billion to J.P. Morgan to complete its acquisition of Bear Stearns. The loans will be secured solely by difficult-to-value assets inherited from Bear Stearns. If the assets decline in value, the Fed -- and therefore the U.S. taxpayer -- will bear the cost.

Aware of the potential political backlash, Fed and Treasury officials briefed Democrats throughout the weekend. Events moved so fast that there was little time for much substantive outreach. Mr. Bernanke spoke with Massachusetts Democrat and House Financial Services Committee Chairman Barney Frank on Friday. Fed staffers emailed updates to Mr. Frank's office on Sunday.

"I believe this is the right action that was taken over the weekend," said Senate Banking Committee Chairman Christopher Dodd of Connecticut, a Democrat, who spoke with Messrs. Bernanke and Paulson on Sunday during deliberations. "To allow this to go into bankruptcy, I think, would have [created] some systemic problems that would have been massive."

General Advice:

1. Plan early! Some organizations, including the Federal Government, have deadlines as early as November. Most of the openings for summer jobs and internships will occur between December and March. Ideally, do research during the fall semester and begin to make inquiries over winter break.

2. Before searching, consider your goals and ask yourself a few questions. What career fields are you interested in? What do you hope to gain from your internship? What types of organizations are you interested in working for? Where do you want to have your internship?

3. Come up with a plan and be proactive in your search. Don't rely only on email announcements or internships posted to OCEAN. Be creative and look for opportunities.

4. Prepare a resume and cover letter. When you apply for a summer positions, many organizations will use these as their application. Attend a resume preparation workshop and have your resume reviewed to help you get started.

5. Prepare for the interview. Be as familiar as possible with the organization. Talk to friends and alumni, and use the resources in the library and on the web.

Energy Presentation
It is important for us to have the energy sector in our portfolio because in the long-run it will give us a large return.
Oil and gas stocks did much better than the S&P 500.
Exxon, Occidental – are among a few that are doing very well.
Oil prices are rising! Boosted the overall performance of all these oil stocks.
Now there are forecasts that the oil prices will decrease, so b/c of the number of people selling the oil stocks the oil stocks prices are down.
We need to decide if we think the oil stocks will rise or not, should we buy?
If we were to buy one, it should be Exxon.

Members will choose a certain sector that they find interesting.
Stay in that sector for the rest of the semester.
This way you can really get to know the sector. What causes changes in those stocks? What stocks are in that sector? What are the price changes?

Finance
Merrill Lynch’s CEO resigned.
Goldman is underperforming S&P 500.
Most of the stocks are underperforming. Due to economic situation with banks now.

Transportation
Want to sell Southwest Airlines and to buy Lockheed Martin, which makes satellites and military aircraft
Why not Boeing?
Higher earning and a lower P/E ratio.
Harley Davidson is doing bad, bad, bad! We want to buy Exxon instead.

HARVARD BUSINESS SCHOOL LAUNCHES NEW HBS 2+2 PROGRAM™

Groundbreaking deferred admissions approach seeks undergraduates who may not have considered business education

BOSTON - Harvard Business School (HBS) today unveiled HBS 2+2, a first-of-its-kind deferred MBA admissions program designed to reach qualified college students, especially those who may not typically consider business as a career path or business education as a future option.

This unique program will give undergraduates a guaranteed place in a future Harvard Business School MBA class, contingent upon their graduation from college and the successful completion of two years of approved work experience. Some of the world's leading organizations such as Google and Teach for America have signed up as recruiting partners, receptive to hiring 2+2's for the work experience component of the program.

Harvard Business School will reach out to high-achieving college juniors studying in the fields of science, engineering, healthcare, government, and public service, among other disciplines, as they begin to explore career and graduate school opportunities.

Undergraduates will be eligible to apply to the HBS 2+2 Program by July 1, after the conclusion of their junior year of college. They will be notified of the School's decision in September of their senior year.

"Young men and women today enjoy a far wider array of educational and career options than ever before," said Professor Carl Kester, Harvard Business School's Deputy Dean for Academic Affairs. "With this program, we want to reach a new group of applicants and encourage them to see the versatility, value, and opportunity provided by a Harvard MBA degree as they set out to make a difference in the world."

"Many undergraduates underestimate the versatility of an MBA and the positive effect it can have on many careers. In reality, MBA graduates, and HBS graduates in particular, are working in a wide variety of positions in many diverse fields," said Kester. "Students who come through the HBS 2+2 Program will get real life experience, an understanding of business, and the critical thinking skills taught at HBS that will help them be influential leaders in whatever field they choose to work."

The notion that prospective MBA students must have worked for five or six years before applying to business school has become almost accepted wisdom. But Harvard Business School believes that there is no single profile for the successful MBA applicant, and that by reaching this group of talented and younger students sooner, HBS will be able to have an even greater impact on their lives and their careers.

"College students are at an important juncture during their junior year," said Andrea Kimmel, who directs the HBS 2+2 Program. "HBS 2+2 will help to open their minds to a host of new career and education options available to them as they set forth on their journey of exploration after college."

A unique feature of HBS 2+2 is that admitted students will receive assistance from the School in finding a job for the two years between their college graduation and full-time matriculation at HBS. As many as 100 organizations, including Google, Teach for America, The Clorox Company, and McKinsey & Company, are expected to serve as recruiting partners to facilitate the job search process.

"Google believes that attracting diverse and talented employees is key to our continued growth and innovation," said Kim Scott, Google's Director of Online Sales and Operations. "This program will give us another channel to find people with broad talents and skills who might not traditionally look at either a business degree or a tech company, but can be highly successful here."

"Teach For America is pleased to partner with HBS 2+2 in recruiting our nation's most promising future leaders -- individuals who will ultimately hold leadership roles across every sector from business to policy to medicine to education and related social sectors -- to our mission of ending educational inequity," said Wendy Kopp, Teach For America's CEO and founder. "Our growing alumni force provides important examples of the impact that individuals with training in business can have in effecting education reform and social change, and we are excited about partnering with HBS to make that training all the more accessible to those who commit themselves to lives of civic and educational leadership."

During their two year-work experience, students accepted through HBS 2+2 will participate in on-campus summer academic programs that will allow them to experience HBS classes taught by HBS faculty as well as meet their fellow classmates.

HBS 2+2 admits will have a dedicated career coach and access to strategic career coaching advice through the self-assessment on-line tool CareerLeader-College™ (developed by HBS). They will also be able to use a dedicated website to connect with both current HBS students and their program peers.

HBS anticipates that the 2+2 Program will grow to about five to ten percent of the 900 member incoming Harvard MBA class over the next several years.

- you may need to mail in information

Is it good or bad to have a number of accounts open?
- having multiple credit cards help with your credit score as long as you keep paying and don’t accumulate debt
- but once you graduate you will have to pay banking fees

How can you find out about your credit score?
- creditreport.com – fill out your info and they can tell you what it is and also how to increase it
- if you owe a lot of money it reflects badly in your credit score
- also if you apply for a credit care and get rejected – bad

Why is it good to have a good credit score?
- when you are getting car or house of apartment
- anything above 720 is high

9:30 – Discussion of Wharton China Business Forum
- speakers were really good
- one of the biggest issues was about the huge fall in the Chinese stock market in February – not a reflection on Chinese economy
- organized by Wharton China Society – undergraduate club – really well orgranized – people from Carnegie Mellon and companies in New York and New Jersey came to network
- definitely recommend others to go to it – if you are interested in economics in China
- keep in mind though there are many good countries to invest in – China is just one of many

What is going on with the stock market?
- many Americans people have invested in China - upcoming world market
- last Tues. dropped a huge amount - dropped US stock market to lowest it's been in last 4 years
- Chinese govt said they need to regulate economic growth - investors, got a little nervous, all sold their stocks - so stock market in China went down dramatically
- this caused the Japan market to go down - US market also went down
- now Chinese mainland stock market is rebounding - however the Japanese and European stock markets are not so easily able to rebound b/c weary of world market investments and also b/c fears of US falling into recession

- don't need an Econ or Math major to succeed in business

ETFs
- exchange traded fund
- like an index fund, diversity, but you can trade it like a stock
- must pay a broker
- no minimum requirement because it is like purchasing stocks
- annual fees are as low as .09% (compared to 1.3% for mutual funds)
- global - buy and sell around the world
- long-term investments

Mutual Funds
- collective investment - pools money from investors and invests in stocks, bonds, etc.
- money is professionally managed
- value of the share of the mutual fund - calculated daily based on the total value of the fund divided by the number of shares
- like a stock in which you purchase a share, but a mutual fund is diversified - lowers risk
- some mutual funds - pay commission

sixth annual Wharton Women Business Conference, /Define Your Own
Success/, sponsored by Ernst & Young. The event will be on Friday,
February 9, 2007 between 10:00AM and 4:30PM at Jon M. Huntsman Hall at

- Bryn Mawr alum, class of 1990 - Political Science Major
- MBA from University of Chicago while working with McKinsey
- thinking "outside the box" -> find a job that has mentors who will teach you
- hard to find mentorship on Wall Street
- find a person who has time, not necessarily just the job
- Business School:
* at least 5 years working experience
* more experience, the better
* if you don't get into one of the top 5 business schools, go to one of the lower tier schools - no point paying that much for the same education
* teaches analytical, but not start-up, on your own
- when choosing a job - let yourself experience everything
- switched jobs every year for 4 yeras to decide what she wanted to do
- what you want to do is usually found by accident
- experience yourself to different trends/patterns from other companies and combine them -> essence of entrepreneur
- you do get offered jobs as an entrepreneur
- create structure where you can wait for the perfect opportunity
- worked for the Queen of Jordan to Jerusalem
- contacted alum in area of interest to just find out more information
- over span of 4-5 months comtacted over 200 individuals/organizations
- Rockefeller Foundation, World Bank - all employed by then and though different, learned from all
- created mechanism to do what she wanted to do
- turned down dozens of good job offers, but it wasn't perfect
- stayed in contact with person she interned with, 6 or 7 years after
- have faith in your ability
- entrepreneurs = story telling
- it is all about convincing, convincing, and proving
- paint a picture they want to see - twist it around to your advantage
- How do you perceive it? - if you believe its not an issue, it's not an issue
- Love the game, being an entrepreneur is about liking to fail
- Don't worry about failing - get to the point where you can talk about your failures at parties
- took 2 years off in Europe just to relax
- do not present your failures as such, but as strengths
- income will influx up and down - learn to save and when to spend
- starting a new business is overwhelming - but start off with the introduction when you have a blank sheet of paper.

EPS: Earnings Per Share = Net profit/Number of shares
This tells how well the company is doing.

P/E ratio: The Price to Earnings ratio = Market price/EPS
This tells you the proce you are willing to pay for every dollar you may earn in the future.

PEG: prjected earnings growth rate to the P/E = (P/E)/(projected growth in earnings)
Like P/E, a lower PEG could indicate less pay for future predicted earnings growth.

P/S: price to sales = Stock Price/Sales Price Per Share
The P/S number reflects the value placed on sales by the market.

Trend of Growth
Look at the stock's historical performance against its main competitors and the entire industry.

The State PIRGs are a network of independent, state-based, citizen-funded organizations that advocate for the public interest. Since 1970, they’ve been delivering results-oriented citizen activism to protect our environment, encourage a fair and sustainable economy, and foster a responsive democratic government. The PIRGs uncover threats to public health and well-being and fight to end them, using the time-tested tools of investigative research, media exposés, grassroots organizing, advocacy and litigation.
The state PIRGs employ close to 400 organizers, policy analysts, scientists and attorneys, and are active in 47 states and Washington, D.C. We are currently hiring an additional 150 graduating seniors for nationwide positions as advocates, lobbyists and organizers.

The PhD Program at the Graduate School of Business at the University of Chicago will be holding an information session at Swarthmore College for Bryn Mawr, Swarthmore and Haverford students on Wednesday, October 11, at 6:30 pm at Parrish Hall, room 159.

"We're interested in undergrads with a wide range of backgrounds. We've found that many students don't know much about business PhD programs (or even that they exist). It can be a good direction for those who want something interdisciplinary and a bit more applied than the typical PhD. Virtually everyone admitted to the Program (and to most of the top programs around the nation) gets full funding (tuition and stipend). The academic job prospects are quite good, both in terms of placement and salary. Below is more information on the info session we'll be doing on October 11.
