Also looked to Goldman Saks
Found out in Feb. that she didn’t get some internships
Last minute - KPMG – applied – around Feb.
Worked with CDO councilors – helped with resume – pick up buzz words
MUST learn Excel – big plus! – use spell check
Example of project – explain why plastic bag company was going under – research stocks – creating reports – explain what went wrong
Advice: work it – go to every event there is – talk to people about their careers – make connections

Christine – math major
RIPS – Research in Industrial Projects - UCLA – work on a team of 4 – international students
Worked on math and computer science problems
Made their own project and solved it for an industry
8:30 or 9 and ended whenever usually 6 or 7
Found out through mentors and math department
Went to CDO for resume and application materials – tailor it to business she applied to
Applied in Jan/Feb. – got back to her by March
Required a main application – more than 50% are international students
2-3 recommendations – personal statement
Phone call – short interview
Process was done by late April
Advice: use the CDO they are there to help

Danny – Math/Econ major
Research at Bryn Mawr
Worked with math department – topology
8:30 – 6:00
Econ – democracy and corruption – Professor Rock
Asked Math professor to work with them over summer – got summer research grant from math department
Talk to professors
No interviews – but some advice – be sure about what area of study you want to do research on – be aggressive but not pushy – no 100% guarantee so keep your options open
You accomplish something – and present something or write a paper
Advice: be open and creative about things – don’t reject any opportunities by not attending info sessions – make a resume asap

Jenny – Psych major
Interned at Lieman Bros.
Boston
9 weeks
Book trades, checked dividends
Sales trading
9-5
Did her own research – set up mock portfolio
Found out through Posse program – leadership program
Only freshman that they hired – made a portfolio of all the stuff she had done – emphasizing teamwork, etc.
Since investment banks don’t usually hire freshman and sophomores – try to start with non-profit organizations
Goldman – interview – emphasize teamwork, flexibility, creativity, diversity, take initiative to complete different projects – she didn’t end up getting that

Sabrina –
Bangladesh – Center for Policy Dialogue
Helped to get third party news out about government policies
Worked with an economist
Did research with her – encoded surveys into data
Also had to do administrative stuff
Non-profit organization – wanted to work at home
First choice - so emailed the contact person – don’t usually intern undergraduates
Went through Dean’s Office – got a grant through the school
Process started in early Jan. – had to go through the sets of contacting people – why are you interested? – resume
Advice: start early – when the year begins – network with companies when they come to campus
